Typically hunter safety classes are held before the major hunting seasons. Since most of the major hunting seasons (deer, turkey, elk, rabbit, squirrel, etc…) in most states are closed/closing soon, you may have to wait a few months. Most states will offer a hunter safety class in the Autumn if they can find an instructor. If your state has a spring turkey season, they may offer a hunter safety class prior to that. Your only other option is to see if your state has an online class (which lets you study at home, review at a class for a couple hours, and then take the test).
Sound Wisdom above. Never heard of a requirement and no classes offered. Are you sure you did not miss it? Most classes start in August,Sept,Oct and some in the Spring if there is hunting in your State at that time.
Ck your State DNR site for online courses or if other States safety courses are accepted. You could then take a online course for that State and have it mailed to you and your squared away.
They are very educational and I recommend sitting through the 8 hours of speakin in them if you have not been hunting before or dont know a lot about hunting. Watch the newspapers and ask around if anyone knows there could be some in bordering counties.
I took the Hunter safety classes when I was 14 too. It was part of 7th grade Science class (class was required but range time required parent permission and was held at the Police range not on school grounds) back in Jr High. (our Science teacher was a hunter Safety Instructor but class was taught by DOW game wardens)
I would say to check with your school to see if it is offered there and if not contact your state’s DOW or local chapter of NRA or Ducks Unlimited (I have also seen Hunter Safety classes sponsored or taught by by rod and gun clubs, the Elks, Eagles, Mason’s lodge, VFW, American Legion, National Guard as well as the Sheriff’s or Police Dept. Even saw them taught at the Catholic and LDS Churches) Also might contact the Boy Scouts, they used to offer classes.
Again – we have a person that needs a local answer and you do not put down what state or county you live in. Duh? You do realize if you did this – people could send you links to the next class??? You could be already signed up – instead – you are only reading generic answers.
I am a certified Alaskan hunter safety instructor.
Years? Do you live in New York City?
I do not think you are looking hard enough. You need to check your state fish and game training web site. Nearly all states do 95% online training and then you meet at a shooting range for the practical part for a day or two.
Look for available classes in another county or state.
